Peekaboo Design Group History
Peekaboo Design Group started as “Mum’s the Word” in 2004. After realizing that the British had a lock on everything “mum;” and after having numerous folks ask if the company offered any other flowers besides mums, the name was changed. Peekaboo was chosen because it sounds like “Pink or Blue?” Since the signature service is helping parents keep the special surprise of boy or girl, it was a perfect fit!
Owner, Kim Hendry, came up with the idea for the baby planning business when she and husband, Bruce, starting trying for children. She watched as her pregnant girlfriends attempted to balance work, home, family, being pregnant and preparing for baby. Scared of what was waiting ahead for her, she dedicated herself to forming a solution.
In addition, she and Bruce were determined to keep the surprise of boy or girl. Bruce’s solution was to paint one room pink and one blue, then put the baby in the appropriate painted nursery after. The only problem with that solution is that Kim wanted her nursery totally complete when they came home and didn’t necessarily want pink or blue. This left her brainstorming a more thorough solution which ultimately became the process that Peekaboo is well known for today.
It took a long time for Kim to take the leap into this new venture until her brother, Jimmy, and his wife, Samantha, announced that they were pregnant with their third child and that they wanted Kim to test her concept on them…the surprise and all!
Everything went off without a hitch and Samantha, having already had two children, helped Kim form an even more extensive service menu based on her experience. Today, Samantha is a crucial part of the Peekaboo Team.
Most exciting to Kim and Bruce was how successful the surprise nursery experience had been, not only for the family bringing home baby, but for the close family and friends. Because of this, Kim decided to take the concept to market.
Since the first Peekaboo baby, the roots of the company have grown deep. After years of meeting and really listening to what expecting parents want and need, Kim has built a strong business foundation dedicated to helping expecting parents relieve the stress of preparing for baby so that they can focus on a happy healthy pregnancy and baby.
Today, the company is divided into three departments: Baby Nursery Planning, Baby Essentials Planning and Baby Non-Essentials Planning (or the Fun Stuff!). This structure allows for each department to really delve in deep in order to secure a keen understanding of every product and service available under their department.
