Have you ever noticed that the leather and fabric bound books look best arranged on your bookshelves? They give that warm, one-lamp-lit library feel. Unlike most of todays books on politics, self-help or perhaps, on occasion, a trashy romance which give more of a fluorescent lit, kid screaming bookstore kind of feel.
Now let's move to the nursery or kid's room. It is almost impossible to display those skinny little circus colored books to be aesthetically pleasing. Plus, you'd like them to get more use than most of the books in our adult libraries. That's why my favorite thing in a baby/kid's room is the shorter bookshelf with baskets. As an organization freak, it warms my heart to see the geometrically proportioned baskets perfectly filling a bookshelf, knowing the fun held inside for little ones to enjoy.
Instead of organizing the books from left to right on a bookshelf, place them binding up in a couple of baskets. Pull out the basket when your child wants to read. This allows your kids to pull out and see all of the books because they're easier to put back. Keep a few of your favorites out for easy access.
And, what about all of those little toys and games that make a quick mess? Place them in a few baskets and hide them away on the bookshelves when not in use...makes clean-up easy and efficient. You'll be surprised how much storage this will give you. It's magnificent!
SAFETY NOTE: Don't forget to attach your shelves to the wall securely so that toddler/child does not pull the shelf over on them when retrieving their toys.
