When contacted by someone who has just found out they're pregnant we always advise, "Get plenty of rest your first tri-mester and we'll see you in the second tri-mester." Your first tri-mester is really a good time to relax and let the idea of being pregnant sink in! Plus, you typically have more energy in your second tri-mester.
Once that second tri-mester kicks in and you get down to the nitty-gritty of planning, I recommend first looking at the nursery, specifically your furniture. Most stores that carry nursery furniture do not have their own warehouse. They keep floor samples and order the furniture from the manufacturer once a customer places an order. Even your larger chain stores, like Babies R Us, do not keep furniture in-store. Furniture, once ordered, can sometimes take between six and even twelve weeks to get in, depending on the furniture you choose.
To delay things further, when the economy first started to turn, manufacturer's limited their inventory so not to create excess that might not be sold. Now, not only did the order have to be processed before delivered to the vendor, it also had to be created. This assured later delivery dates for the customer. The economy hasn't fully recovered, so I'd caution that this could still apply today. In fact, count on it. Down times force companies to find more efficient ways to operate in order to stay alive. After an economy recovers, it is expected that many of these operation changes will remain.
All of the above should illustrate how important it is to get our in front of your furniture ordering. Better to have plenty of time to order that piece you absolutely love, rather than have to settle on the piece that can be here in 4 weeks. After all, you're on limited time to begin with, you don't have a tri-mester to wait for furntiure!
